{"id":2977,"date":"2014-10-28T10:10:30","date_gmt":"2014-10-28T17:10:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.medtexter.com\/?p=2977"},"modified":"2014-10-28T10:10:30","modified_gmt":"2014-10-28T17:10:30","slug":"the-fda-approves-hiv-medication","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.medtexter.com\/the-fda-approves-hiv-medication\/","title":{"rendered":"The FDA approves HIV medication"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For the very first time, the <a title=\"FDA\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fda.gov\">FDA<\/a> has approved a contraceptive pill to prevent the spread of HIV infections: Truvada.<br \/>\nThis drug is intended to cut the risk of people that are having sex with HIV \u2013 infected partners, though studies have shown that the drug only cuts the risk by 42% and should not be considered a replacement for condoms alone, cautions the <a title=\"AIDS Healthcare Foundation\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aidshealth.org\">AIDS Healthcare Foundation<\/a>.<br \/>\nTruvada has been on the market since 2004, for the purpose of treating people who already have HIV. The FDA approved the drug as a contraceptive in July, 2012.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\nHIV spreads at a whopping rate of 50,000 new infections per year.\u00a0 The pharmaceutical companies have been working along side the HIV community to cut the spread for several years and this is the first time the FDA has approved a drug to be used for people who are not yet infected.<br \/>\nAn <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/48198452\/ns\/health-aids\/t\/fda-approves-first-pill-help-prevent-hiv\/#.UARqt44YScE\">AP article<\/a> suggests that due to almost a quarter million people worldwide, who are HIV carriers and who are unaware that they carry the disease, \u201c\u2026doctors and patients say new methods are needed to fight the spread of the virus.\u201d But it is difficult to calculate how a new method might work on people that don\u2019t know they need to take action if they don\u2019t even know they are HIV positive. It\u2019s almost as if anyone that is having sex is vulnerable and needs to be discussing this with their doctor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\nIf you do know that you or your partner is HIV \u2013 infected, contact your doctor and ask if Truvada might be helpful to you.<br \/>\nIf you get, or have, a prescription from your doctor for Truvada, it is essential that you take it as prescribed.
